Villefranche is three ports in one anchorage. The village itself is a keeper: ochre facades stacked over a swimmable bay, the medieval Rue Obscure tunnel-street, a beach 200 metres from the tender. Nice, ten minutes west by train, brings the Promenade des Anglais, the old-town flower market and socca by the plateful.
Monaco, twenty-five minutes east, is the pocket principality of palaces, F1 corners and superyacht arithmetic. The counsel for a single day: pick ONE neighbour plus the village, not both; the train makes everything feel closer than tender queues allow. And families take note: Monaco's hills hide 79 free public lifts and escalators, which turns the vertical city into an accessible one.
The bay made the town: deep enough for warships, sheltered enough for anyone, it drew the Duke of Savoy to found a free port ('Villefranche') in the 13th century, and navies from Savoy's to the US Sixth Fleet have anchored here since; your ship swings where battleships did. The village's Rue Obscure, a street swallowed by houses built over it in the 1300s, sheltered residents from bombardments as recently as WWII. Jean Cocteau, recovering here in the 1950s, painted the fishermen's Chapelle Saint-Pierre into a dream.
Nice next door was Italian ('Nizza') until 1860, when a plebiscite handed it to France, leaving a cuisine and dialect that never fully switched sides; its Promenade des Anglais was funded by English winterers in the 1820s. Monaco, meanwhile, is the last survivor of a vanished species: a city-state ruled by the Grimaldi family since 1297, when Francesco Grimaldi took the fortress disguised as a monk (he's on the coat of arms, sword under robe). Broke by the 1850s, the principality bet everything on a casino; the bet paid so well that Monegasques haven't owed income tax since 1869.
Citizens, note, are banned from their own casino: the house only takes foreign money.

Riviera rhythm: unhurried mornings, proper lunches, dressed-up evenings. French greetings open every interaction (bonjour before business, always). In Monaco add polish: the casino enforces dress and photography rules, and shorts read as beachwear away from beaches. Nice's old town runs on socca (chickpea pancake) etiquette: eaten hot, with pepper, standing. Beaches here are pebbles, not sand: water shoes turn wincing into swimming. And tender-port karma: the queue back at 3pm is long because everyone had the same idea; be the family that went back at 2 or 4.

The stacked ochre village itself: the eerie-lovely covered Rue Obscure, Cocteau's painted fishermen's chapel (€3-4), and lanes that end in bay views. Thirty unhurried minutes, zero euros, and half the ship never bothers. Their loss.

The tender-dock quay is one long lunch: moules-frites, grilled dorade and rose with the bay glittering behind your ship. Tourist-priced but honestly so, and the zero-logistics option that turns waiting for a tender into an aperitif.

Genuinely one of the day's sights: the bay's amphitheatre of villas and mountains from water level, morning light on the ochre village. Starboard side in, camera out. Tender ports have their compensations, and this is the best one in Europe.

No castle (Louis XIV saw to that), but the Riviera's best free viewpoint: the sweep of the Baie des Anges, the port, terracotta roofs, plus a waterfall and playground. The lift is free; the photo is mandatory.

A sovereign 2km² of palaces, superyachts and legend: the Rock's old town and palace square (changing of the guard 11:55), the cathedral where Grace Kelly rests, the port where F1 barriers live year-round, and Casino Square's car-spotting theatre. Wandering is free; the Oceanographic Museum (~€19) is the family-grade paid pick.
