Palma is the Mediterranean's most underrated port city: a golden Gothic cathedral rising straight from the seafront, an old town of courtyarded palaces and tapas alleys, and a genuinely great beach transit-close, all conquerable for bus fare. The DIY maths embarrasses the excursion desk: ship 'Palma highlights' tours run ~€150 a couple against about €26 DIY for the same cathedral and lanes. The two upgrades both earn their keep: the circular Bellver Castle in the pines (€4, and free Sunday afternoons), and the 1912 wooden train through the mountains to Soller for orange-scented valley romance.

Palma has been a prize for three thousand years: Talayotic islanders, then Romans, then three centuries of Moorish Madina Mayurqa whose bathhouse still hides in the old town, until Jaume I of Aragon took the island in 1229 and ordered a cathedral built where the mosque stood, on the sea wall itself, so returning sailors saw God's own lighthouse first. La Seu took 400 years to finish and one earthquake and one Gaudi to renovate: the great architect spent a decade here (his wrought-iron baldachin hangs over the altar) before quitting after a disagreement, as was his way. The 14th century's Bellver Castle above town is Europe's rare circular castle, a perfect Gothic ring that spent centuries as a political prison.
Mallorca's other exports tell the island's story: the Soller valley's oranges funded a railway tunnel through the mountains in 1912 (the varnished train still runs), Chopin and George Sand wintered scandalously in Valldemossa in 1838, and the ensaimada's lard-laminated spiral has been the island's edible flag since the 1600s. Package tourism arrived in the 1950s and never left; Palma absorbed it and stayed, at its stone heart, absolutely itself.

Palma keeps Spanish hours softened by island calm: late lunches, later dinners, sacred sobremesa. Catalan's Mallorquin dialect shares signage with Spanish; hello and gracies both land well. Cards work everywhere including the bus. The ensaimada travels in flat octagonal boxes designed for exactly this; airlines and cruise cabins have carried millions. Beach clubs price like beach clubs, but every stretch of sand has a free public majority. And Sunday-afternoon Bellver being free is the sort of thing locals assume everyone knows: now you do.
