Naples divides cruisers into two correct camps. Camp one walks into the city: the Spaccanapoli canyon of scooters and shrines, pizza at its source for €6-10, the veiled Christ, coffee with attitude, all free-to-cheap and gloriously unfiltered. Camp two heads for the bay's greatest hits: Pompeii by cheap train (the single best DIY archaeology day in cruising: €3.
30 each way plus €18-22 entry against $120+ ship tours), or the pricier romances of Capri and the Amalfi run. The honest counsel: Naples itself is criminally skipped. Give the city half your day even if Pompeii takes the rest, and eat the pizza where pizza began.
Naples is one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities: Greek Neapolis ('new city') was already old when Rome absorbed it, and the Greek street grid still underlies Spaccanapoli. Everybody ruled here (Byzantines, Normans, Angevins, Aragonese, Bourbons), each leaving castles like sediment, and by the 1700s Bourbon Naples was Europe's third city, its opera house and palaces built on the same bay that kept trying to kill it. Vesuvius looms over everything: its 79 AD eruption buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in hours (Pliny the Younger watched and wrote it down, giving vulcanology its founding document), preserving bread in ovens, graffiti on walls, and the body-shaped voids archaeologists fill with plaster.
The volcano remains active, monitored and, locals shrug, part of the family. Pizza was born in these lanes: flatbreads of the poor, ennobled in 1889 when a margherita in patriotic colours was named for a queen. UNESCO lists the old town; the old town doesn't care.
It's busy arguing about football, whose stadium is named for the city's other deity, Maradona.

Naples runs on volume, gesture and genuine warmth: chaos is the operating system, not a malfunction. Cross streets with commitment, guard phones near scooter lanes, and take the petty-crime warnings seriously without paranoia: the centro is fine with normal city sense. Coffee is a ritual with rules (espresso, standing, sometimes pre-sugared, occasionally paid forward as a caffe sospeso for a stranger). Pizza is eaten with knife and fork or folded a libretto, never criticised. And the corno (red chilli-horn charm) sold everywhere is anti-jinx equipment; locals will tell you it only works if received as a gift.

A complete Roman city stopped mid-morning in 79 AD: streets rutted by cart wheels, bakeries with ovens loaded, frescoes, amphitheatre, and the casts that silence every tour group. Entry ~€18 timed; the DIY train version costs a tenth of ship tours for identical ruins. Three hours minimum, water and hat non-negotiable.
