Grand Cayman does two world-class things and does them within easy reach of the tender dock. First, Stingray City: a waist-deep sandbar in the North Sound where wild southern stingrays glide around your legs, one of the great animal encounters anywhere, and local operators run it for half the ship's price with free terminal pickups. Second, Seven Mile Beach: regularly ranked among the best beaches on earth, public along its whole length, and reachable by a $2.
50 local bus. The island is safe, orderly, English-speaking and expensive by Caribbean standards (it's a banking centre with beaches), which makes the cheap wins taste even better. Watch the two traps: tender delays, and the Cayman dollar, which is worth MORE than the US dollar.

Columbus sighted these islands in 1503 and called them Las Tortugas for the sea turtles swarming the water; there were so many that ships for two centuries afterwards stopped here just to load turtle meat. The name that stuck, Cayman, came from the caimans early visitors thought they saw. Permanent settlement came late, in the 1700s, by a salty mix of sailors, deserters and, yes, some pirates who found the islands' remoteness convenient.
Caymanians became the Caribbean's great seafarers, crewing ships worldwide, and turtling remained the economy into living memory; today's Turtle Centre is the conservation-minded descendant of that trade. The islands' famous escape from taxation has a legend attached: the Wreck of the Ten Sail in 1794, when Caymanians heroically rescued the crews of a Royal Navy convoy wrecked on the East End reef, and a grateful King George III supposedly granted freedom from tax forever. Historians wince at the story; Caymanians tell it anyway.
What's certain is that the tax-neutral status turned a fishing outpost into one of the world's great financial centres in a single generation after the 1960s, which is why banks now outnumber beach bars and the roads are suspiciously good.

Cayman is polite, orderly and a touch formal by island standards: greetings matter, beachwear stays at the beach, and Sundays are genuinely quiet with many shops shut. Tipping runs US-style, 15-18%, and many restaurants add it automatically. The currency catch deserves repeating: the Cayman dollar is fixed at 1 KYD = 1.25 USD, so a $10 price in KYD is $12.50 US. Ask which dollar. US cash is accepted everywhere. Church is big, swearing in public is actually illegal, and the driving is on the left.

The tidy capital repays an hour: the remains of the 1790 fort, the harbourfront, the National Museum in the old courthouse, and water so clear at the ironshore that snorkellers get in right in town.
