Cozumel is the busiest cruise port in the Western Caribbean, and it's earned it. Jacques Cousteau put this island on the map in the 1960s when he called its reefs some of the best diving on earth, and the Mesoamerican Reef is still the main event. But you don't need a tank to have a great day here.
The beach club scene is the best in the Caribbean: $65-80 buys a genuinely all-inclusive day that the ships resell for considerably more. San Miguel town rewards anyone who walks two blocks inland off the waterfront, where taco prices halve and the food gets better. And the fixed taxi rates make the whole island DIY-friendly.

Cozumel was sacred long before it was a cruise stop. For the ancient Maya this was the shrine island of Ix Chel, goddess of the moon, fertility and childbirth, and Maya women were expected to make the pilgrimage here at least once in their lives. The ruins at San Gervasio are what remains of that shrine.
Cortes landed in 1519, the first Spanish contact with Mexico, and the diseases that followed emptied the island almost completely. For centuries afterwards Cozumel was a pirates' waystation (Henry Morgan and Jean Lafitte both sheltered here) before refugees from the mainland's Caste War resettled it in the 1840s. The twentieth century brought two transformations.
Allied forces built the airfield during the Second World War. And in 1961 Jacques Cousteau filmed the reefs of Palancar, told the world, and changed the island forever. Today Cozumel receives more cruise passengers than almost anywhere on earth, but the reef Cousteau raved about is still there, ten minutes offshore, protected as a national marine park since 1996.

Cozumel runs on cruise time and knows it, but it's still Mexico, and the good manners matter: a 'buenos dias' opens every conversation better than a demand. Haggling works in markets and with taxi drivers for tours, not in shops or restaurants. Tipping is 10-15% in restaurants, and check whether 'propina' is already on the bill. US dollars are accepted everywhere, though change often comes in pesos and the rate favours the house; paying in pesos saves a few percent. The fixed taxi rates are per cab, not per person. Drink bottled or filtered water, and let the marquesita lady tempt you.
