Key West is the walk-everywhere port where the danger isn't distance, it's losing three hours in a bar with a six-toed cat on your lap. The island's whole historic core fits in a one-mile loop: Hemingway's house and its polydactyl dynasty, the Southernmost Point buoy, Duval Street's cheerful chaos, and Mallory Square, which throws a nightly sunset festival that late-departing ships get to crash. Paid attractions are modest ($19 for Hemingway, $35 for the Conch Train) and the best things (the light, the architecture, the roosters, the attitude) are free.
One planning note: many calls end late afternoon; if yours stretches past sunset, the Mallory celebration becomes the headline.
Key West has been rich, ruined and reborn more times than anywhere its size. In the 1830s it was, per capita, the wealthiest town in America, built on 'wrecking': licensed salvage of the ships that Florida's reef ate weekly, a legal industry with auction houses and fortunes. Lighthouses killed the business, cigars and sponges came and went, and by 1934 the town was so broke it was handed to the federal relief administration, which decided to sell it as a tourist paradise.
Hemingway wrote A Farewell to Arms and half his best work in the house on Whitehead Street through the 1930s, and his six-toed cat Snow White's descendants still hold the grounds. Harry Truman ran the country from his Little White House here for 175 days of his presidency. And in 1982, when a Border Patrol roadblock strangled the Keys' tourism, Key West staged history's most profitable tantrum: seceding for one minute as the Conch Republic, declaring war on the US, surrendering immediately, and applying for a billion dollars in foreign aid.
The flag still flies everywhere, and the attitude it commemorates is the town's true export.

Key West runs on 'One Human Family' (the official town philosophy), sunset applause and roosters with right-of-way. US norms for money and tipping. The gypsy chickens are protected and everywhere; feeding them is discouraged, photographing them is compulsory. Key lime pie disputes are the local religion: authentic means yellow filling, never green, on a graham crust. Duval gets rowdier as it goes south-to-north toward evening; families naturally drift to the quieter Whitehead Street parallel. And 'Conch' (pronounced konk) means a Key West native: earned by birth, borrowed by everyone else.
