Falmouth is the port where Jamaica's two speeds meet. The town itself is the Caribbean's best-preserved Georgian townscape, walkable straight off the ship, and most cruisers skip it entirely, which is their loss and your gain. The headline excursions all involve drives: rafting the Martha Brae on a bamboo raft poled by a captain who's done it for decades, climbing the terraced cascade of Dunn's River Falls hand-in-hand with strangers, or the newer Blue Hole swimming holes above Ocho Rios.
The ship-versus-direct maths here is the widest we've measured in the Caribbean: Dunn's River runs $134-160 through the ship and about $65 with a licensed local operator; Martha Brae $109-130 aboard versus roughly $65 DIY. One honest warning balances the savings: distances are real, roads are slow, and this is a port for booking with established operators who plan around all-aboard, not for winging it.
Falmouth was born rich and built fast. Laid out in 1769 on a grid (before New York got one) and named for the English birthplace of the governor, it became the sugar boom's showcase port: at its peak, the surrounding Trelawny parish held nearly ninety estates, and Falmouth reputedly had piped water before New York City. The elegance was built on horror, though: this was one of the busiest slave ports in the Caribbean, and the wealth in every Georgian facade was made in the cane fields by enslaved Africans.
Their resistance shaped the island. The Baptist deacon Sam Sharpe's 1831-32 uprising began in this parish, was brutally put down, and so shocked Britain that it accelerated abolition; emancipation came in 1838, and Falmouth's William Knibb Memorial Church, where freed people buried their shackles, still stands in town. When sugar collapsed, Falmouth simply stopped, which is why the Georgian town survived intact where richer ports rebuilt themselves into concrete.
Trelawny's other exports run faster: this small parish raised both Usain Bolt and a remarkable share of the world's sprint champions, something locals will mention within the first ten minutes, with justification. The cruise pier, opened in 2011, woke the town up again; the buildings you're walking past were waiting the whole time.

Jamaica runs on warmth and directness in equal measure. Greet first, always. 'Yeah mon' covers most situations and 'soon come' explains most timing. Vendors and unlicensed guides can be persistent around the port: a firm, friendly 'no thanks, respect' works, and licensed JUTA/JCAL operators (red licence plates) are the ones to ride with. US dollars are accepted everywhere at round-number rates; Jamaican dollars get slightly better value and make small purchases easier. Tip raft captains and falls guides $5-10; they're the experience. And the jerk rule: if the smoke isn't coming from a pimento-wood drum, keep walking.

The Caribbean's best-preserved Georgian townscape, and most of your shipmates will never see it. Water Square's fountain, the 1796 courthouse, gingerbread verandas, and the William Knibb church where freed people buried their chains in 1838.
