Costa Maya is two different port days wearing one name. Stay inside the port complex and you get a clean, expensive resort simulation with a pool. Take the ten-minute taxi to Mahahual and you get one of the cheapest, most charming beach days in the Caribbean: a sandy seafront promenade, palapa restaurants where the lobster is cheap and the beer is cold, calm swimmable water, and the Mesoamerican Reef close enough to snorkel from shore.
Then there are the two big trips: Chacchoben, real Maya ruins in the jungle an hour inland, and Bacalar, the seven-colour lagoon that's only reachable on long port calls. The DIY savings here are the biggest we've measured anywhere: local ruins tours run $55-90 against $110+ on the ship.
For most of history nobody built anything big here, and that's the point: this coast was the quiet edge of the Maya world, a fishing and trading shoreline between the great cities inland. Chacchoben, the ruins an hour away, was already a thriving settlement around 200 BC, and its restored temple pyramids are what a mid-sized Maya centre actually looked like, minus the Chichen Itza crowds. Closer to town, the story is water.
Bacalar's lagoon of seven colours was a Maya trade hub, then a Spanish town so regularly sacked by pirates sailing up from the coast that the Spanish built the star-shaped Fort San Felipe in 1729 to stop them; it still stands, cannons and all. Mahahual itself stayed a tiny coconut-and-fishing village into the twenty-first century. Hurricane Dean flattened it in 2007, the rebuilt cruise pier reopened bigger, and the village grew a seafront malecon while somehow keeping its flip-flop soul.
What you're visiting is that rare thing: a cruise port where the real town next door is still real.

Mahahual runs at village speed, so let it. A 'buenos dias' and a smile get you everywhere. Beach clubs on the malecon mostly work on a minimum-spend or day-pass basis; ask before you settle into loungers. Haggle gently with taxi drivers for waiting time and tours, not for the posted fares. Tipping 10-15% in restaurants, and tip the massage ladies on the beach if you indulge. Pesos get slightly better value than dollars, though dollars work everywhere. The reef is protected: reef-safe sunscreen only, and never stand on coral.

Fair's fair: the port village has a big saltwater pool, a swim-up bar, shops and dolphin pens, all steps from the gangway. If mobility or a short call keeps you close, it does the job. Just know everything costs more here, and Mexico is ten minutes away.

The beach itself is free and swimmable, calm and shallow, good for small kids. Loungers run $5-15 or come free with a food-and-drink minimum at the clubs behind them. This might be the cheapest great beach day in the Caribbean.
