The one everyone's here for: vintage cars climbing the 1898 pass on cliff-edge trestles past Bridal Veil Falls and Dead Horse Gulch to the summit. Around $155 booked direct, $130-180 depending on departure, versus higher ship pricing for identical trains. Left side going up for the views. Book weeks ahead in peak season.

Broadway at 2nd, 5 min from the docks

The National Park Service runs free films, museum exhibits and ranger-led walking tours of the preserved boomtown. Free, excellent, and the fastest way to make every false-fronted building on Broadway mean something.

The main street, from the docks north

Seven blocks of 1898: the driftwood-covered Arctic Brotherhood Hall, the Red Onion Saloon (a working bar in a former brothel, with cheeky upstairs tours), outfitters and fudge in gold-rush storefronts. Peak crowds 10-3; gorgeous and half-empty outside them.

1898's most famous establishment, now a lively saloon downstairs and a short, funny, surprisingly historical brothel-museum tour upstairs. Adults-leaning humour; kids fine downstairs with a root beer.

Yakutania Point & Smuggler's Cove trail

Footbridge behind the airport, 20-30 min walk from the docks

The locals' waterfront: an easy forest trail to rocky points over the fjord with your ship framed against the mountains. The best free hour in Skagway, and most shipmates never find it.

Lower Dewey Lake trail

Trailhead 10 min from Broadway; allow 1.5-2.5 hrs

A proper but manageable hike: switchbacks climbing about 500 feet to a quiet mountain lake with a loop trail around it. Real Alaska, zero dollars, moderate legs required.

Skagway Fish Company & the crab shacks

By the small boat harbour

Dungeness crab, halibut and chips, and salmon chowder by the harbour. Alaska seafood prices are honest rather than cheap; the crab is worth it once.

Klondike Doughboy & fudge row

Broadway

Fried-dough 'doughboys' rolled in cinnamon sugar, and competing fudge kitchens with free samples. The gold-rush-adjacent sugar economy, alive and well.

Local Alaskan makers (not the chain jewellers)

Broadway and side streets

Skagway's chain jewellery shops follow the ships around the world; the real finds are Alaskan-made: ulu knives, birch syrup, qiviut wool, local art marked with the Made in Alaska bear. Look for the emblem and ask who made it.

Must try. Birch syrup, and spruce-tip anything

Skagway Overlook

20-25 min uphill walk from town

The postcard angle: town grid, harbour, ships and the wall of mountains in one frame. A short, steepish walk that earns the photo.

Yukon & summit bus-rail combos

6-8 hrs; passports required; from ~$199

The long-day upgrade: ride the train one way and motorcoach the other, crossing into Canada for Yukon viewpoints, Carcross Desert and Emerald Lake. Spectacular on clear days. Passports mandatory for every traveller.
