Ketchikan concentrates more within a walk of the dock than any other Alaska port: Creek Street's stilt-boardwalk over a salmon run, the world's largest totem pole collections, and the cheerfully absurd Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show right behind the berths. The paid tiers scale from a $40-ish show ticket to $250-350 Misty Fjords floatplanes. The salmon are the free spectacle: from mid-summer the creek boils with them, sea lions patrol the mouth, and the ladder by the falls costs nothing to watch.

Ketchikan is Tlingit country first: the creek was a summer fish camp (Kitschk-hin, roughly 'thundering wings of an eagle') long before the 1880s salmon canneries arrived and built a town on stilts because flat land didn't exist. By the 1930s this was the salmon capital of the world, with over a dozen canneries running, and Creek Street was its red-light district: a boardwalk of brothels over the water, where, as the town still gleefully repeats, both salmon and men came upstream to spawn. Dolly Arthur's house there is now the museum of that era.
The totem story is deeper and more serious: the poles at Totem Bight and Saxman were carved and re-carved through a Civilian Conservation Corps programme in the 1930s that hired Tlingit and Haida carvers to rescue and replicate poles from abandoned villages, and Ketchikan now holds the largest standing collections in the world. The Tongass, America's biggest national forest, surrounds everything: seventeen million acres of the rainforest that built, fed and still defines the town.

US norms with rainforest adjustments: nobody comments on rain here, and 'liquid sunshine' is the official euphemism (the rain gauge downtown is a civic monument). Tip US-style. Native art is the meaningful purchase, and provenance matters: look for the Silver Hand emblem marking authentic Alaska Native work, and buy from Native-owned galleries where possible. The salmon ladder etiquette is simple: watch as long as you like, wade never.
