Icy Strait Point is the port people don't research and then rave about. The waters off Point Adolphus hold the largest summer gathering of humpback whales in Alaska, close enough that sightings are effectively guaranteed and tours run shorter and cheaper on fuel than Juneau's. The ZipRider is the world's largest zipline: a mile and a half of cable dropping 1,300 feet at 60mph, and yes it's as good as that sentence sounds.
And the cultural layer is the real thing rather than a show for the pier: this is Huna Tlingit land, the port is their business, and the dance performances, carving sheds and crab feasts are run by the people they belong to. Brown bears, not black, roam Chichagof Island behind town, one of the densest bear populations anywhere.
The Huna Tlingit have lived around Icy Strait and Glacier Bay for thousands of years; when the Little Ice Age advanced the glaciers and pushed them from Glacier Bay itself, Hoonah became the principal village, and it remains the largest Tlingit community in Alaska. The 1912 Hoonah Packing cannery below the ship dock canned salmon through the industry's boom, closed in the 1950s, and sat rusting until the community's corporation, Huna Totem, made a bet almost nobody had tried: build and own a cruise destination outright rather than rent culture to someone else's port. Icy Strait Point opened in 2004 as Alaska's only Native-owned cruise destination, and the model (profits to shareholders who are the local people, hiring from the village, culture presented on its own terms) has since been studied and copied across the industry.
The gondolas, the piers and the mountaintop lift came with the 2010s expansion. Out in the strait, the story is older and simpler: the upwelling at Point Adolphus has concentrated feed, and therefore whales, since long before anyone was watching them for fun.

This is a village of about 900 people that happens to host ships, and it behaves like one: wave at drivers, buy from the village when you can, and treat the cultural performances as hospitality rather than product.
