Juneau is Alaska's two-for-one port: the most dependable humpback whale watching on earth (operators publish sighting rates above 95% and many guarantee it) and a drive-up glacier at Mendenhall, doable in one day if you book the combo or move smartly. The value spread is dramatic. Whales run $110-200 with independent small boats against higher ship pricing; the glacier runs $45-60 by tour shuttle or about $2 each way on the public bus, a fact that has saved our readers more money than any other sentence in Alaska.
Downtown itself earns an hour: tramway views, the Alaska State Museum, salmon everything, and a crab shack with a cult following.
Juneau exists because of a hangover-adjacent prospecting trip: in 1880, Tlingit chief Kowee led Joe Juneau and Richard Harris to gold in the creek that now splits downtown, and the first town founded after Alaska's purchase from Russia boomed around it. The mines here were the opposite of the Klondike's lone-panner romance: vast industrial operations like the Treadwell complex across the channel, once the largest gold mine on earth, until it flooded catastrophically in 1917. The capital moved from Sitka in 1906, giving Juneau its odd double life: a government town of 32,000 with no road access, where legislators, fishermen and glacier guides share the same three coffee shops.
Above and before all of it, this is Aak'w Kwaan Tlingit land; the Sealaska Heritage Institute downtown and the towering Kootéeyaa Deiyí totem trail along the waterfront are the living, current version of that story, not a museum's. And looming over town, the Juneau Icefield feeds Mendenhall and thirty-some other glaciers, all in measurable retreat: the visitor centre's photo line of where the ice reached in 1950 is the quietest, most effective climate exhibit in America.

Juneau is Alaska's most liberal, most governmental, most espresso-fuelled town, and it wears all three cheerfully. US norms: dollars, 15-20% tips, phones just work. Rain is the default setting (over 200 wet days a year); locals don't carry umbrellas, they wear the rain, and Xtratuf boots are formalwear. Respect the whale-watching etiquette your captain sets: distance rules are federal law, and the good operators are proud of them. Downtown's jewellery-chain strip exists for the ships; the local economy is a block uphill.

The dockside strip is ship-chain jewellery; one block up, Juneau turns real: the Alaskan Hotel's saloon (1913), independent bookshops and galleries, and the Red Dog Saloon's sawdust-floor theatre of a bar. Ten minutes of climbing earns a different town.
