Lookout Cay is what Disney built after listening to two decades of Castaway feedback and one big cultural critique: this time, do it with the Bahamas rather than just in it. The destination on Eleuthera's Lighthouse Point was designed with Bahamian artists and architects, themed to Junkanoo rather than castaways, and staffed heavily from the island itself. Practically, the formula matches Castaway: beaches, food and splash areas included in the fare, with rentals, premium experiences and cabana-class hideaways as the paid layer.
The differences that matter: the arrival is longer and more scenic, the cultural programming (Junkanoo performances, Bahamian art everywhere) is the actual headline, and the beaches face open Atlantic-meets-Caribbean water that runs a little livelier than Castaway's lagoon. Sea-day legs? This is the stretch where Eleuthera's pink-tinged sand shows off.
Lighthouse Point spent years as one of the most argued-over pieces of land in the Bahamas. Disney's 2019 purchase of the 700-plus acre peninsula drew genuine opposition from environmental groups who wanted the wild point protected outright, and the project that emerged in 2024 is shaped by that fight: under a fifth of the site developed, the pier built as an open trestle to avoid dredging a channel, solar arrays targeting most of the destination's power, and conservation easements over the rest. The cultural story was deliberate too.
Eleuthera's own history runs deep (the name is Greek for freedom, given by Puritan settlers shipwrecked here in 1648, and the island later became a centre of Bahamian pineapple farming and, at Preacher's Cave, one of the country's founding sites), and Disney commissioned Bahamian artists to lead the design language, from the Junkanoo-inspired colourwork to the story-walk installations. Whatever your view of a corporation buying a beloved wild point, the result is the most consciously Bahamian thing Disney has built.

The same ship-card economy as Castaway: no cash, ship tipping culture, everything runs on the DCL app. The cultural programming is the thing not to sleep through: Junkanoo rush-out performances and Bahamian craft and music sessions run on a schedule, and catching one changes the day from beach-with-theming to actual place. Many cast here are Eleutherans; asking about their island gets you better recommendations than any guide, ours included. The water is glorious but livelier than Castaway's protected lagoon: respect flag warnings, especially with small swimmers.
