Castaway Cay is the day most families rate highest on the whole cruise, and the pricing logic is inverted from every other port: the beaches, the food, the kids' club, the waterslides on the swim platform, the tram, the hammocks, all of it is included in your fare. The money questions are narrow and specific: gear rentals, the stingray experience, alcohol, and the cabanas that vanish within minutes of booking windows opening. The real currency here is timing.
First tram off the ship wins the best loungers; the second family beach and the far end of the sand stay quiet all day; and the adult beach is a genuinely separate world. Bring reef-safe sunscreen from home, because buying it on board stings worse than the sunburn.
Disney didn't build this island from nothing. Gorda Cay, as it was, spent the twentieth century as a smugglers' waystation: rum runners in Prohibition, then drug flights in the 1970s and 80s using the little airstrip that still crosses the island (it's now the walkway to the adult beach, and the parked prop plane is a wink at the past). Disney leased the cay in the 1990s, spent about $25 million moving 50,000 truckloads of sand, and opened it in 1998 as cruising's first private island with its own ship dock, an engineering flex nobody else had managed.
The name change to Castaway Cay came with a backstory of shipwrecked settlers that the design team scattered across the island in props and signage. Roughly 55 of the island's 1,000 acres are developed; the rest is left wild, and the Bahamian government keeps a watchful partnership over all of it.

The unwritten rules of a Castaway day: claim loungers before exploring, not after. Cookie's BBQ (the included lunch) runs two locations, and Cookie's Too, at the second family beach, has half the queue of the first. The included soft-serve station is self-service and unlimited, a fact small children discover with religious awe. Cast members ashore are the same crew who serve you aboard, so the tipping culture follows the ship's, not a port's. And the whole island runs on ship time and your Key to the World card; cash is useless here.
