St Thomas is the easiest big day in the Eastern Caribbean, and for American guests it barely counts as abroad: US territory, US dollars, US phone plans, no passport needed for US citizens. The island's pitch is simple. One of the world's most beautiful beaches (Magens Bay, a mile of heart-shaped calm), the Caribbean's most famous viewpoint ride (the Skyride to Paradise Point), a proper marine park for the kids, and duty-free shopping with a $1,600 allowance, double the usual.
The fixed-rate taxi cooperative makes all of it DIY-friendly. One quirk to enjoy: they drive on the left here, in left-hand-drive American cars. Nobody can fully explain it.

St Thomas spent 250 years being Danish, which surprises almost everyone. Denmark colonised the island in the 1670s and named the harbour town Charlotte Amalie after their queen. The Danes declared it a free port in 1764, and that single decision echoes into your shopping bag today: the duty-free tradition is older than the United States.
The harbour's deep water and neutral flag made it the Caribbean's great marketplace, for goods both honest and not. Pirates loved it: the towers called Blackbeard's and Bluebeard's still watch the town, and Edward Teach himself is said to have used the harbour. It was also, more darkly, one of the busiest slave-trading ports in the Atlantic world, and freedom here was seized rather than given: the enslaved people of the Danish islands won emancipation in 1848 by mass revolt on St Croix.
Charlotte Amalie's other claims run deeper than beaches. The synagogue on Crystal Gade, with its sand floor, is among the oldest in the western hemisphere. And in 1830 a boy named Camille Pissarro was born above his family's shop on Main Street; he left for Paris and helped invent Impressionism.
The United States, worried about German submarines, bought the islands from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million in gold. Transfer Day is still marked every March, and the island has been America's holiday balcony ever since.

Greetings matter enormously in the Virgin Islands: 'good morning' or 'good afternoon' before any question is basic manners, and skipping it reads as rude. Tipping is US-standard, 15-20%. Dress is relaxed but beachwear stays at the beach. Island time is real, so build slack into everything. The local food to seek out: pate (fried stuffed pastries, pronounced pah-TAY), callaloo, and fungi (cornmeal, the local side, pronounced foon-JEE). The drink is the bushwacker, a frozen chocolate-rum situation the island claims as its own. Order one. Maybe not two before the Skyride.

The heart-shaped mile of sand that keeps making world's-best-beaches lists, with water so calm it's effectively a giant swimming pool. Entry $5, parking-lot loungers $8, bar and snack shack on site. The ship sells this as a $55 excursion; the taxi-and-entry version costs a family a fraction of that.

The famous step-street built from ship-ballast brick (count them: there are actually 103) climbing to the old Danish watchtower the tourists call Blackbeard's Castle.
