Puerto Plata is the Dominican north coast at full character: a Victorian gingerbread old town, the Caribbean's only cable car rising to a mountaintop botanical garden, and, forty minutes inland, the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua, the single most exhilarating natural attraction on any Disney itinerary. That last one deserves its billing: you hike up a jungle canyon with a guide, then come down through it by jumping and sliding through carved limestone pools, and the DIY price is about $12-15 at the gate against $100+ through the ships. As a brand-new Disney port, local operators are actively courting cruisers and prices remain honest.

Columbus sighted this bay on his first voyage in 1492 and named it for the silver shimmer of the water (or the mountain's clouds; the town keeps both stories). The settlement he ordered nearby, La Isabela, was Europe's first town in the Americas, and its ruins sit up the coast. Fort San Felipe, the squat fortress at the malecon's end, went up in 1577 against pirates and later held the DR's founding father, Juan Pablo Duarte, as a prisoner.
The town's golden age came in the late 1800s, when tobacco and sugar money built the gingerbread Victorian quarter that survives around the Parque Independencia, and German merchants ran the amber trade that gave the coast its name: this shore holds some of the world's finest amber, including the insect-in-resin pieces that inspired a certain dinosaur film. The 1960s-70s brought the cable car, Latin America's oldest aerial tramway, up Mount Isabel de Torres to the smaller cousin of Rio's Christ. Cruise tourism arrived big in 2015 with Amber Cove, then Taino Bay in 2021, and Disney's arrival now makes the north coast a headline rather than a detour.

Dominicans greet warmly and expect it back: 'buenos dias' opens doors, and a little Spanish is repaid tenfold. US dollars work everywhere at friendly rates; pesos do slightly better in the mercado. Haggling belongs in craft markets, not shops or restaurants. Tipping runs 10%, often included as 'propina' on bills, so check. Merengue and bachata are the soundtrack and occasionally the sidewalk. Mamajuana, the local rum-honey-bark infusion, comes with a wink and a story at every bar; taste before you buy a bottle, and buy the bottle anyway. Watch the teleferico ticket-office scam note: buy at the official booth, not from approaches outside.
