San Juan is the best walk-off port day in the Caribbean, full stop. The oldest city under the US flag puts its whole highlight reel within a mile of the gangway: two colossal Spanish forts, blue-tinged cobblestone streets, balconied houses in gelato colours, and a food scene that turns plantains into religion. It's a US territory, so American guests need no passport, dollars work, and phones just work.
Your only real decisions are pacing (the old town rewards wandering more than box-ticking) and whether to spend half the day at the Bacardí distillery across the bay, which locals reach on a fifty-cent ferry while the ships sell the same visit for $79 and up. Rainforest ambitions at El Yunque are real but belong to long calls only.
Founded in 1521 by Juan Ponce de León, San Juan is the second-oldest European city in the Americas, and it wears every year magnificently. Spain spent three centuries turning the islet into the Gibraltar of the Caribbean: El Morro's six levels of batteries rose from 1539 to guard the harbour mouth, San Cristóbal grew into the largest fortification the Spanish ever built in the Americas, and the city walls, La Muralla, still wrap the old town in fifteen-foot stone. The forts earned their keep.
Francis Drake was bloodied and repelled in 1595 (cannon fire reportedly shot through his cabin), the English took the city briefly in 1598 and were evicted by dysentery, and the Dutch burned the town in 1625 but never cracked El Morro. Even the cobbles have a story: the blue-grey adoquines underfoot were cast from iron furnace slag and carried here as ship ballast. Spain's rule ended in 1898 when the United States took Puerto Rico in the Spanish-American War; islanders became US citizens in 1917, and the island's in-between status, proudly Puerto Rican, legally American, shapes its politics and its poetry to this day.
La Fortaleza, begun in 1533 and still housing the governor, is the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas. And somewhere between the Caribe Hilton in 1954 and Barrachina's doorway in 1963, someone invented the piña colada. Both places have plaques.
The dispute is now a tourist attraction in itself.

Puerto Rico is bilingual in law and warmth: Spanish first, English everywhere tourists go, and any attempt at 'buenos días' repaid with interest. Tipping is US-standard, 15-20%. The old town keeps Spanish hours in spirit: a proper lunch matters, and the plazas fill in the evening. Music leaks out of doorways as a civic feature; salsa was substantially built by Puerto Ricans, and reggaeton was born here. Food words to know: mofongo (garlic-mashed fried plantain, the flagship), tostones, pastelillos, and lechón if you see it. The street cats of Old San Juan are semi-official residents with their own charity. Mind the afternoon heat on the fort ramparts; carry water.

Six storeys of Spanish fortress stacked on the harbour mouth, begun 1539, never taken from the sea. The $10 ticket covers both forts for the day. The approach across the vast green esplanade, kites overhead, is one of the Caribbean's great walks.

The bigger, quieter sibling: the largest Spanish fortification in the Americas, a labyrinth of tunnels, dungeons (sailor graffiti included) and garitas. Same $10 ticket as El Morro. Start here if you're walking from the ship; the crowds start at the other one.

A flat, free promenade squeezed between the bay and the mighty city walls, ending near the red San Juan Gate where arriving dignitaries once landed. Cats, pelicans, wall-scale you can't get from above. Do it early or late; there's no shade.
