Dublin fits a cruise day better than most capitals: the Georgian-and-medieval core walks end to end in an afternoon, the two blockbuster tickets (the Book of Kells at Trinity, the Guinness Storehouse) bracket it neatly, and everything between is squares, bridges, buskers and pubs where conversation is the true national product. The planning skeleton is simple: pre-book Kells (€21.50+) and, if beer calls, the Storehouse (€22-34, with its skyline-bar pint included), thread Grafton Street, St Stephen's Green and Temple Bar between them, and bank 40 minutes of port logistics each way.
First-timers over-schedule Dublin; the city's genius is what happens in the unplanned half-hours.
Dublin began as a Viking longphort on a 'black pool' (Dubh Linn) in 841, and the Norse town's timbers still surface under construction sites. The English arrived in 1170 and stayed, contentiously, for 750 years: Dublin Castle ran their rule, Trinity College (1592) educated their elite, and the 18th century's Anglo-Irish wealth laid out the Georgian squares and doorways the city still wears. 800 AD illuminated gospels that are the island's great treasure, migrated to Trinity for safekeeping in the 1660s and now turns a page every day under glass. The other pillar arrived in 1759 when Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease (rent: £45 a year) on an abandoned brewery at St James's Gate; the black stuff built Victorian Dublin's biggest employer and its most visited modern shrine. The 1916 Easter Rising's bullet holes still mark the GPO's columns on O'Connell Street; independence followed in 1922, and literary Dublin (four Nobel laureates, one Bloomsday, a pub per Joyce chapter) never stopped writing it all down.
Today's city splits its reverence evenly between saints, scholars and whoever's playing at Croke Park.

Dublin's true currency is talk: the person beside you at the bar will review your itinerary, improve it, and tell you a story doing so. 'The craic' means the fun/news/atmosphere, and asking 'what's the craic?' is a greeting. Pints of stout are poured in two stages: the pause is sacred, and rushing it identifies tourists faster than any accent. Rounds are bought in turns; joining one is an honour with obligations. Card payments are universal; tipping is 10-12% at table, nothing at the bar. And Temple Bar's famous pubs charge famous prices: locals drink one street in any direction.

If your call uses the southern anchorage, the harbour town itself earns an hour: two great Victorian piers to stroll, Teddy's famous 99 ice cream, the James Joyce tower at Sandycove (free) up the coast. The DART into Dublin hugs the bay and is half the fun.
