Copenhagen is the northern port that softens the toughest sea-day cynic: pastel townhouses over masts at Nyhavn, palace guards drumming through lunchtime streets, the mermaid holding her 110-year pose, and Tivoli, the 1843 pleasure garden that lent Walt Disney ideas he happily acknowledged, twinkling by the station. The city runs cashless, bikes outnumber people, and the DIY sums stay friendly: DKK 24 covers the metro in, the harbour's icons are free, and the big spend is really a choice between Tivoli's gates (~DKK 150-170, rides extra) and Rosenborg's crown jewels. For Disney families the Tivoli connection isn't trivia: it's a pilgrimage with rollercoasters.
Copenhagen began as a herring market ('Havn') fortified by Bishop Absalon in 1167, grew into the capital of a kingdom that once ruled Norway and swathes of the Baltic, and kept the world's oldest still-reigning monarchy's line unbroken into the present Frederik X. The 17th century's builder-king Christian IV raised Rosenborg, the Round Tower and Nyhavn's canal; the fires and British bombardments of later centuries burned and battered the city into its current graceful rebuild. Hans Christian Andersen arrived a poor cobbler's son in 1819, lived along Nyhavn (numbers 18, 20 and 67 all hosted him) and wrote the tales (including 1837's Little Mermaid) that made the harbour statue inevitable; Edvard Eriksen's 1913 bronze has since survived decapitations, paint and an explosion, returning serene every time.
Tivoli opened in 1843 on the argument, made to the king, that amused subjects don't plot revolutions; a century later a Kansas-born visitor named Walt took extensive notes on its lights, cleanliness and bandstands. The hippie freetown of Christiania (1971) and the harbour-bath, bike-lane city of today complete the picture: a monarchy-anchored capital that keeps quietly inventing modern urban happiness.

Danish practicality with hygge edges: queues are informal but sacred, jaywalking draws stares even at empty crossings, and bike lanes are traffic, not pavement: look twice, then again. Cards tap everything; many places refuse cash outright. Danes' English is flawless and their reserve melts on contact. Smorrebrod (open sandwiches) are lunch architecture eaten with cutlery; hot dogs from polser carts are the street exception. Tipping is included and extra is genuinely optional. And 'hygge' can't be bought, but a candlelit coffee while rain hits Nyhavn's cobbles is a working prototype.

Smaller than expected, more moving than admitted: Eriksen's 1913 bronze on her harbour rock, gazing at the water Andersen sent her from. Free, brief, obligatory: the trick is folding her into the waterfront walk south past the Gefion fountain and star-fort Kastellet rather than making a pilgrimage of the statue alone.

The 1971 commune in old naval barracks: murals, workshops, lakeside paths, its own flag. A fascinating, mostly mellow wander with house rules (clearly signed: no photos on the main drag, no running). For curious teens-and-up crews rather than stroller squads.
