Bermuda breaks the Caribbean rules because it isn't the Caribbean: it's a British mid-Atlantic island 650 miles off Carolina, cooler, greener, tidier and pricier, with the best public transport of any cruise stop in this hemisphere. The strategy is the $19 all-day transport pass (or exact tokens), which turns pink-sand Horseshoe Bay, the capital Hamilton and UNESCO-listed St George's into one connected day. Disney's arrival with the Wish's New York season makes this a planning-heavy port: sailings often stay overnight, so the guide splits into day one (beaches and Dockyard) and day two (towns and caves) rhythms.
Prices run high everywhere (this is one of the world's richest islands), which makes the free pink sand and the $4.50 ferry feel even better.
Bermuda was settled by shipwreck: the Sea Venture, bound for Jamestown in 1609, drove onto the reefs and its survivors' tales helped inspire Shakespeare's Tempest. The island became England's oldest continuously inhabited colony, and its story is maritime through and through: cedar ships, privateers, the salt trade, and the enslaved and free Black Bermudians whose skilled pilotage and shipbuilding the whole economy rested on (emancipation came in 1834, celebrated still at Cup Match, the island's cricket holiday). The Royal Naval Dockyard where you're standing was Britain's 'Gibraltar of the West': after losing the American colonies, the Navy built this fortress arsenal with convict labour through the 1800s, and its Keep now houses the National Museum.
The Bermuda Triangle mythology, the shorts-as-businesswear, the pastel cottages with white stepped roofs designed to catch rainwater (the island has no rivers, so every roof is a reservoir): all of it stems from a tiny place that learned to make scarcity elegant. St George's, the 1612 original capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage town and the oldest continuously occupied English town in the New World.

Bermuda is polite, proud and more formal than the Caribbean: greetings matter, beachwear stays at the beach, and Bermuda shorts with knee socks are genuine business attire, not a costume. The Bermuda dollar is pegged 1:1 with the US dollar and both circulate interchangeably. Tipping 15-17%, often added. Rental cars don't exist for visitors (locals-only by law): it's buses, ferries, taxis and the small electric Twizy-style rentals. Exact change or app tickets on buses. The rum swizzle is the national drink, the Dark 'n' Stormy is the trademarked one (Gosling's owns it, legally), and the fish sandwich on raisin bread is the lunch of the people.

The capital across the Great Sound: Front Street's pastel arcades, the cathedral tower's view, Bermuda-shorts businessmen in the wild. The ferry ride itself is a harbour cruise in disguise. Wednesday summer evenings add the Harbour Nights street festival with extra ferries.
